Sculpture Information

This sculpture shows the world as a handheld apple from which a bite has been taken.

The desire for things, I suppose we could call it greed, seems to me to result in some kind of self-destruction. A combination of our desire to consume and the drive to make increasing profits results in exploitation of the planet. What we possess never seems to be enough. We want more, newer, upgraded, quicker, cheaper, easier… The consequences being quite simply terminal to the planet at every level. The soil, water, oceans, vegetation, living creatures and our own bodies become slowly poisoned by our own greed. Here are just a few examples; deforestation, the overuse of pesticides, hormones, and plastics, and the death of fertile soils due to being overworked. The alternative is living sustainably meaning to take only what we need and giving back to support the ecosystems. But with the ‘modus operandi’ being economic growth or capitalism, the outlook does not look good.

So in summary The Devil’s Gateway is greed.
