Sculpture Information
This stone had a sitting form within it and came to a peak with what seemed like hair. So releasing this sculpture was not difficult. I called her Bertha as she reminded me of a friendly bar maid. The blue was flecked with faint white stripes making it look like a garment.
I took her down to Devon to show a friend who I was staying with. My friend had been making plans to start a sewing school in an old building which had once been used for single mothers to learn to sew at the time of the workhouses. I said she should look up the history of the place. I went to the museum and was sent to a local’s home who had the last book describing the sewing centre.
Upon reading the book, to my shock the lady who ran the school had been called Bertha and the ladies had worn blue and white striped uniforms. Very strange!
