Sculpture Information
I was unsure of the direction to carve this piece. As I studied its shape a leaf dropped right next to the stone, and the shape matched the rock! So, I began to carve that shape. Then realised it was a wing and behind there was rough rock which looked like a snake’s head. I fashioned it into a seraph. A fiery serpent creature who lives in the fire around the throne of God. It is the seraph that brought the burning coal to touch Isaiah’s lips (Isaiah Chapter 6) to make them clean. One could postulate that it was a seraph who fell from heaven to become lucifer.
But as I was slimming out the snake head it cracked in two. I reworked the wing into the original leaf idea but as I sanded it fractured into many pieces. And the largest fragment is what you now see in the petit feu.
