Sculpture Information
This sculpture began as a solid cylinder of alabaster. I could see either a pair of lungs or a foetus so decided to go with the latter. As the foetus is such a complex subject, I did not carve it ‘by eye’ as usual. Instead, I made an accurate small wax maquette (model) of a foetus. I placed the model into a small shot glass which was the same proportions as the alabaster cylinder. I marked the points where the wax model touched the glass and then scaled them up onto the alabaster cylinder.
From this point, it was a case of joining the various points together. The sculpture reminds me of my son John as he was small when he was born. Having children was one of the most profound experiences of my life.
I have listed this piece as ‘emotive’ as it has generated comments from both sides of the abortion debate.
