The sculpture is carved in Zimbabwean Spring Stone. In Zimbabwe they expose the stone to direct heat and apply wax to enhance the colour. The heat opens the stone pores to the wax giving it a dark, high shine.
The sculpture is called Femoris after the strongest muscle in the body which is found in the thigh. The inspiration for this sculpture was the crossed thighs of a female’s legs. Once finished, I felt that displaying them in an ascending rather than a descending orientation was more aesthetically pleasing.
