Carve your own Portland Limestone tile in this beginner workshop. Learn with Stonemason’s tools and authentic techniques from outline to finish. No experience necessary and all materials and tools are provided.

Course Details

No previous experience is necessary for this engaging, hands-on workshop! This 4-hour “taster” is the perfect way to explore the ancient and rewarding craft of relief carving.

The cost is all-inclusive, covering your tuition and all necessary materials, including your own piece of high-quality Portland Limestone (20cm x 20cm x 6cm).

A P3-Rated High-Efficiency Safety Mask is included and will be required for use during the carving process.

Payment to be completed before the course commences.

Program of Study

What you will learn:

  • Safety First: A comprehensive introduction to Health & Safety in the stonemason’s environment.
  • About the Stone: Gain an understanding of the Portland Limestone you will be working with—its properties, history, and how it responds to the carving process.
  • The Tools: Learn the correct, safe handling, and proper use of essential stonemason’s tools.
  • Design Transfer: Use stencils and carbon paper to transfer your design onto the stone.
  • Carving Process: Follow a clear program covering every stage of carving: outline, rough out, refine, and finish.

By the end of the session, you will leave with your beautiful, finished limestone tile and a foundational understanding of stone carving. This workshop is limited to 5 persons to ensure personalised instruction.
