Course Details
Bring the engaging craft of stone carving directly to your event, organisation, or venue! This popular 4-hour workshop is a mobile version of our beginner-friendly Relief Carving Tile Taster, where no previous experience is necessary. It’s ideal for team-building, educational programs, or creative events.
- Duration: 4 hours (though some may finish after 3 hours).
- Group Size: A maximum of 10 participants to ensure quality instruction.
- Materials: Cost is all-inclusive of a Portland Limestone Tile (20cm×20cm×4cm), a P3 Safety Mask, carbon paper, pencils, paper, all necessary carving tools, and tool replacements.
- Additional Fees (for host): Travel is charged at £15/hour, and set-up and take-down time is charged at £30/hour.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, the host venue must meet the following criteria:
- Environment: Cannot be a domestic dwelling.
- Space: Tables must provide approximately 90cm width per person, plus a separate resource table.
- Lighting/Atmosphere: Ideally covered (April to October), with excellent natural light and heating available for winter months (September to March).
- Air Quality: Must be well-ventilated (e.g., open sides) or equipped with an appropriate dust extraction system.
Program of Study
Participants will learn the foundational skills needed to complete their own relief carving project and take away a finished limestone tile.
- Safety First: A comprehensive Health & Safety introduction to the stonemason’s environment.
- About the Stone: Gain an understanding of Portland Limestone—its properties, history, and how it responds to the carving process.
- The Tools: Learn the correct, safe handling, and proper use of essential stonemason’s tools.
- Design & Transfer: Use stencils (or create a design) and carbon paper to accurately transfer your design onto the stone.
- Carving Process: Follow a clear program covering every stage of relief carving: outline, rough out, refine, and finish.
