Cotswold Life Feature: To set before a king

I’m thrilled to share that my Lamprey Pie sculpture, now installed in the gardens at Highgrove, has been featured in Cotswold Life Magazine.

The carving honours Gloucester’s centuries-old tradition of gifting a lamprey pie to the monarch, a peculiar but wonderful piece of local history I hadn’t known until this commission came along.

From the first sketches and selecting an up-cycled stone at Llanthony Secunda Priory where my sculpting career began, through to hand-carving every detail with mallet and chisel, it was a true labour of love.

Collecting the elected stone from the priory in January 2025, Deborah completed the piece in 64 hours over 16 days working entirely by hand with a mallet and chisel using the same technique as Renaissance sculptors which date back to Biblical times.

Seeing the piece unveiled at Highgrove this May, surrounded by familiar faces from the Gloucester community, was deeply special - a celebration of craft, history, and the city I’m proud to call home.
